Yorkshire Day

Here at Holly Bank we had a wonderful time celebrating Yorkshire Day at nursery with lots of fun, Yorkshire-themed activities!

We enjoyed a lovely role-play picnic outside, using our tea set on a picnic mat in the garden. The children took turns using the little kettle to make cups of tea and pouring them into the tiny tea cups. This encouraged sharing, turn-taking and imaginative play while developing social skills.

We also took our small-world animals outside and explored them on our tyre tuff spots. We sang “Old MacDonald Had a Farm”, naming the different animals and encouraging the children to listen and have a go at repeating the words. We also made the different animal sounds together, creating lots of opportunities to develop communication and language skills through listening, copying and learning new vocabulary.

As part of our Yorkshire celebrations, we also explored some traditional Yorkshire words and phrases! The children had great fun listening to the different terms and trying to say them. They found some of the words absolutely hilarious, which created lots of laughter and conversation. It was a lovely way to introduce new vocabulary while learning a little more about Yorkshire and its local language.

The children had lots of fun exploring tea bags in the water tray, making their own cups of tea using both big and little containers. They enjoyed filling and emptying the containers and exploring the texture of the tea bags as they picked them up from the water. They watched carefully as the tea bags changed the colour of the water, providing a wonderful opportunity for sensory exploration and early scientific learning.

To finish our Yorkshire celebrations, our wonderful cook freshly prepared some delicious Yorkshire puddings and gravy, which everyone thoroughly enjoyed for snack!

What a lovely day celebrating Yorkshire Day through play, sensory exploration, music, language and, of course, some delicious Yorkshire food!
