Admissions Policy

Portland Nurseries Limited is committed to being accessible to all children and families from the local community. We will endeavour to make everyone welcome, both fathers and mothers, other carers and relations and people from all ethnic, religious and social groups, with and without disabilities. We will also endeavour to be flexible about attendance patterns so as to accommodate the needs of individual children and their families and create an inclusive service.

Equality and Inclusion

Portland Nurseries takes great care to treat each individual as a person in their own right, with equal rights and responsibilities to any other individual of a similar age, whether they be adult or child.

The nurseries are committed to providing equality of opportunity and anti-discriminatory practice for all children and families according to their individual needs. Discrimination on the grounds of gender, age, race, religion/belief, colour, marital status, disability, sexual orientation, ethnic or national origin, or political belief has no place within this nursery.

Safeguarding & Child Protection

At Portland Nurseries Limited we work with children, parents, external agencies and the community to ensure the welfare and safety of all children in our care and to give them the very best start in life. Children have the right to be treated with respect, be helped to thrive and to be safe from any abuse in whatever form.

To safeguard children and promote their welfare we will:

  • Create an environment to encourage children to develop a positive self-image
  • Provide positive role models and develop a safe culture where staff are confident to raise concerns about professional conduct
  • Support staff to notice the softer signs of abuse and know what action to take
  • Encourage children to develop a sense of independence and autonomy in a way that is appropriate to their age and stage of development
  • Provide a safe and secure environment for all children
  • Promote tolerance and acceptance of different beliefs, cultures and communities
  • Help children to understand how they can influence and participate in decision-making and how to promote Fundamental British values through play, discussion and role modelling
  • Always listen to children
  • Provide an environment where practitioners are confident to identify where children and families may need intervention and seek the help they need
  • Share information with other agencies as appropriate.

The nursery is vigilant in identifying signs of abuse and reporting concerns. Our practitioners have a duty to protect and promote the welfare of children. Our prime responsibility is the welfare and well-being of each child in our care. As such we believe we have a duty to the children, parents and staff to act quickly and responsibly in any instance that may come to our attention. This includes sharing information with any relevant agencies such as Kirklees Duty and Advice Service health professionals or the police. All staff will work with other agencies in the best interest of the child, including as part of a multi-agency team, where needed.

All staff employed at Portland Nurseries Limited are fully vetted with a current enhanced DBS

Premises & Security Policy

Portland Nurseries Limited provides a safe and secure environment where children can learn and develop, both indoors and out. The nursery is always secure, with locks to gates and access doors closed and are unable to be opened from the outside without a key. Daily checks take place to ensure the premises and surrounding areas are safe and secure. Portland House, Oakwood House and Holly Bank Nursery all have a closed-circuit television security system throughout the building and electronic door entry system in place. The children’s safety is paramount to all other issues. Any actions carried out by a member of staff will reflect the significance of this fact at all times.

Portland Nurseries Limited regards the security of the nursery premises as paramount. Each time the entrance doors are opened it may present a potential risk. All staff have been trained through staff meetings and induction. When staff and visitors arrive at the nursery they are required to sign the time in and out.

If another adult has arranged to pick up the child then a password is required with prior authorisation from the parent or guardian. If an adult arrives without prior authorisation then the parent or guardian will be contacted.

Partnership with Parents

At Portland Nurseries Limited we recognise that parents are children's first, most important educators. We seek to work in partnership with parents during the child's most formative years so as to have the maximum possible impact on their development and learning.

At Portland Nurseries Limited we create many different opportunities for parents to become involved in the work of the setting and greatly value the benefits these provide for children, parents and staff. We endeavour to build strong positive relationships with the parents and carers of all the children who attend our settings. To support this, we provide information for parents in a variety of different formats. Any successful partnership needs to have a two-way exchange of information, knowledge and expertise. We seek to create a harmonious, comfortable environment where parents feel welcome and nursery staff are conscientious and motivated.

Promoting Positive Behaviour

At Portland Nurseries we believe that children flourish best when they know how they and others are expected to behave. Children gain respect through interaction with caring adults who act as good role models, show them respect and value their individual personalities. The nursery actively promotes British values and encourages and praises positive, caring and polite behaviour at all times and provides an environment where children learn to respect themselves, other people and their surroundings.

Children need to have set boundaries of behaviour for their own safety and the safety of their peers. Within the nursery we aim to set these boundaries in a way which helps the child to develop a sense of the significance of their own behaviour, both on their own environment and that of others around them. Restrictions on the child's natural desire to explore and develop their own ideas and concepts are kept to a minimum.

Complaints Procedure

Portland Nurseries Limited aims to provide the highest quality of education and care for all our children. We aim to offer each individual child a warm and caring environment within which they can learn and develop through play. We believe that parents are entitled to expect courtesy and prompt, careful attention to their individual needs and wishes. We hope that at all times parents are happy with the service provided and we encourage parents to voice their appreciation to the staff concerned. We record all compliments and share these with staff.

We aim to bring all concerns to a satisfactory conclusion for all of the parties involved. Portland Nurseries acknowledges that at times parents may wish to make suggestions or raise an issue. We welcome any suggestions from parents on how we can improve our services and will give prompt and serious attention to any concerns that parents may have.

Any concerns will be dealt with professionally and promptly to ensure that any issues arising from them are handled effectively and to ensure the welfare of all children, enable ongoing cooperative partnership with parents and to continually improve the quality of the nursery.

We have a formal procedure for dealing with complaints where we are not able to resolve a concern. Where any concern or complaint relates to child protection, we follow our *Safeguarding/Child Protection Policy.
