The Preschool children at Portland House had a special visit from Louise who is a hairdresser in the local community. They enjoyed an educational group session where Louise asked the children various questions about their own experiences of visiting a hairdressers and they discussed similarities and differences of people’s hair types and what their own was like e.g. colour, straight, curly, short, long. Louise brought a variety of equipment from her salon to show the children and gave them a demonstration. She used the model head to show how to wash their hair, keep it clean and to brush it carefully. The children looked at pictures she had brought of the different areas in her salon and discussed what they would experience on a visit. They talked about the reception area where appointments are made, different rooms in which hair is washed, cut and styled and also the colour room where some people have theirs coloured. The children engaged really well throughout the session and were eager to talk about their own experiences of visiting a hair salon.
