Strawberry Picking

As Fairfield garden flourishes in the summer months we have been connecting with the natural world when enjoying our time out in the garden. We have been observing the flowers growing on the plants, how they need sun, water and oxygen to make them healthy and strong.

Our preschool children have been learning about strawberry plants and how they grow from a flower then turn into a strawberry. We have been counting the flowers over the last couple of weeks to make predictions on how many strawberries we might have to eat. Preschool observed that some of the strawberries get eaten by insects such as slugs and caterpillars and that we can still use these to feed our local resident squirrels because we won’t eat fruit that has been spoiled but we don’t want to waste our hard work. We were sure to keep observing our strawberries growing so that we could enjoy some for our snack too as they are not just for the wildlife in our garden!
