Harlequin preschool have been exploring 3D shapes. We observed, studied and handled a range of 3D shapes, building and making arrangements with them. We loved investigating the different shapes and we were able to recognise the advantages and disadvantages of each shape. We found that some shapes were better for building and using in the construction area, whereas others were better to be used in outdoor games. The children noticed that some of the 3D shapes have particular uses, for example the cone reminded them of an ice cream or a party hat.
Building on our previous learning and knowledge of 2D and 3D shapes, the children have been constructing shape models. We used playdough and sticks to form known and new shapes. The children were able to identify and name shapes they had made. We first made 2D shapes and the children could identify the shape they had made by how many sides it had. The children then explored how to make 3D shapes. At first, we found this to be challenging as the shape became ‘tall’ and ‘fat’ but we persevered and the children were able to construct their very own shape!
