Today at Portland House we have been making natural bird feeders to help our feathered friends during the winter months. If you would like to try this at home it is really easy and fun to do. Make your own eco bird feeder at home: Ingredients- Oranges, butter or margarine, bird seed. Equipment- A mixing bowl, large spoon, teaspoon, Sharpe knife and butter knife.
1) Cut your oranges in half and scoop out the middle (ask a grown up to help with the cutting and scooping as this can be tricky), you can set the middle of the orange to one side and make fresh orange juice or a tasty snack for later.
2) In your mixing bowl add butter and the bird seed together. Using 1/3 butter and 2/3 bird seed or until you get a nice sticky consistency with visible bird seed.
3) Using the smaller spoon scoop the butter seed mix into the scooped-out orange skin till it is flat at the top.
4) You can add more bird seed to the top to make it nice and inviting for the birds.
5) Place outside near a window or on a bird table so you can see how many birds come to try your tasty treat.
The Preschool children were excited when trying to spot a variety of birds that have visited the nursery garden, some of them talked about the ones they had also seen in their gardens at home or out on walks over the weekend too. We enjoyed reading a new story all about the adventures of a bird spotter.
