During Portland House ‘Out of this world space week’ the children in the toddler room have enjoyed learning all about Astronauts, Aliens and the solar system with the planets. The children made their own earth collages using paint and tissue paper to represent the land and the sea, made planet pictures using buttons and read lots of space related stories including “5 little men in a flying saucer.” We invited parents in for our Stay and Play where they were able to enjoy exploring our moon sensory tray, making rockets and creating alien faces in the playdough using buttons, pipe cleaners and googly eyes. As a group we also created our own space related song which the children have enjoyed learning and creating actions for.
The babies had a fun filled Space adventure, we have been making little green men like in the nursery rhyme “5 little men.” Mariam set up a wonderful craft activity where the children could decorate their alien heads. On Thursday we had our space themed Stay and Play with out of this world texture tuff trays and space themed dressing up and songs. Then on Friday we had a dress up day with some super costumes, we had a homemade jet pack and some wonderful alien and astronaut themed tops. We also had lots of fun making little green men out of playdough and “whooshing” them into out of space.
The babies came dressed up for the occasion and were intrigued by our new visitors that had landed, the Aliens. They travelled in their spaceship to visit us and introduced us to new songs, such as, 'Zoom, zoom, zoom, we're going to the moon' and '5 little men in a flying saucer'. The children also created Alien shape masks to take home.
The preschool children had an exciting week learning all about the different planets within our solar system, creating a variety of space crafts and models using recycled materials. They explored maths through weight and sizes as we measured ourselves against the gigantic rocket.
We also had opportunity to experience our own walk on the moon as the garden was covered in moon dust (snow) and we could look at our footprints of our journey on the planet. Our little scientists have undertaken lots of experiments throughout the week learning about gravity, heavy and light and we particularly enjoyed looking for alien life forms and creating our very own aliens.
