Never Too Young To Play

On Friday 8th August children from Portland House Nursery and Holiday Club took part in one of their regular fun Rugby sessions. Portland Nurseries’ General Manager Michael Murphy, not long back from his rugby career playing for Cootamundra in Australia, led the session with a helping hand from Harrison Lister; one of Portland House’s own alumni.

Harrison attended Portland House Nursery from the age of 2 years until he left the Afterschool Club to go to Secondary School at 11 years old. Now at 16 he has returned to help the children develop their physical and social skills through the enjoyment of rugby.

Portland Nurseries have supported Harrison with the fundraising for his under 16’s Siddal Rugby League team by sponsoring the team shirt. The team have been fundraising for the last 20 months for a team of 20 boys and 3 coaches to go on tour to Australia in August

The boys will play games in and Brisbane while doing lots of training, sightseeing and having the chance to watch a few of the Australian professional games. The rugby lessons are a big hit with all the children at Portland Nurseries. It provides a fun environment for children to learn about staying healthy and practice multiple skills such as throwing, catching, kicking, running, spatial awareness and above all team work.

All the staff at Portland Nurseries are so proud to see Harrison growing up and doing so well at a sport he loves. We are looking forward to him coming back and sharing what he’s learnt in Australia and telling all the children about his time there.
