National Storytelling Week

This week in Holly Bank nursery, we celebrated National Storytelling Week by exploring our special story, “Jonty Jenoo.” The children immersed themselves in the magical world of Jonty and his chilly adventures!

The children learned all about penguins and where they live. We looked at pictures, talked about icy habitats, and discovered how penguins stay warm in very cold places.

Inspired by the story, we created our very own penguin pictures using paint, collage materials, and lots of imagination! The children practised:

  • Fine motor skills through painting and sticking
  • Colour mixing and creative expression
  • Language development as they described their penguins

To bring the story to life, we worked together to construct our very own igloo! The children helped design and build it, thinking carefully about shape and structure.

This activity encouraged:

  • Teamwork and cooperation
  • Problem-solving and early construction skills
  • Imaginative role play inside our cosy igloo

The igloo quickly became a wonderful storytelling space where the children retold parts of “Jonty Jenoo” and created their own snowy adventures.

Throughout the week, we:

  • Listened carefully to the story
  • Predicted what might happen next
  • Used actions and expression to retell parts of the book
  • Built confidence speaking in front of friends

It has been a joyful week full of creativity, imagination, and storytelling. Thank you for supporting your child’s love of books at home — perhaps they can tell you all about Jonty and our nursery igloo!
