National Bird Watching Weekend

Today at Bradley House we celebrated National Bird Watching Weekend. The babies got stuck in with some pouring, mixing and stamping. The morning included making the mixture, cutting out the bird stencils and bobbing them in the oven. Once cool, in the afternoon we used lots of media to decorate our salt dough ornaments such as: feathers, paint, tissue paper and salt dough is a quick and easy activity to explore with your little ones and you can make almost anything.

Classic Salt Dough Recipe

2 cups all-purpose flour (plain flour)

1 cup table salt

1 cup warm water (approximate, add gradually)

Method

Combine Ingredients: Mix the flour and salt in a large bowl.

Add Water: Slowly stir in the warm water until the mixture comes together into a ball.

Knead: Knead the dough for 5–10 minutes until it is smooth and pliable, similar to Play-Doh. If it is too sticky, add a little more flour; if too dry, add a tiny bit more water.

Shape: Roll out the dough to about 1/2 cm (1/4 inch) thickness and use cookie cutters or moulds to create shapes.

Add Holes: If making hanging ornaments, use a straw or toothpick to poke a hole in the top.

Dry/Bake: Oven: Bake at the lowest setting (100°C–120°C / 200°F–250°F) for 2–3 hours, flipping occasionally, until completely dry and firm.

Air Dry: Leave to air dry for several days, preferably in a warm place or near a radiator.

Decorate: Once fully cooled, paint with acrylic paints and seal with varnish for better preservation.
