Following on from the success at Nursery World Awards where Portland Nurseries won the ‘Nursery Food Award’ in 2023 and the ‘Health and Wellbeing Award’ in 2024. The staff at Bradley House have continued to focus on providing an enriched learning experience through healthy menu’s, nutrition based learning and sustainable growing in our allotment area.
Over the last 12 months the children and staff have been working on the soil association’s “Food for Life Award”. The award focuses on pioneering a ‘whole setting approach’ to food, which means a good food culture is embedded throughout the educational setting, from kitchen to classroom. Children get to enjoy high quality meals at snack and lunchtime as well as learn about where food comes from, how to grow food and how to cook food, and most importantly the joy that can be found from food, setting healthy habits for a lifetime.
Although the award is now complete the learning hasn’t stopped, our children’s council is currently meeting to discuss what foods we would like to grow in our allotment area this year, ready to sow our seeds and nurture the plants into some tasty vegetables for Judy to cook for our lunch! We will also be participating in the “Let’s grow” program which boosts learning through gardening and introduces us to a whole new variety of wonderful fruit and vegetables for us to grow, taste and explore. Keep an eye out for future news stories updating you on our process along the way!
