Community Adventures

Following on from learning about food and harvest festival a small group of Portland House toddlers and babies went on an adventure to the local supermarket to shop for some fruit for their tasting and exploration activity.

The children looked at the different fruits available to buy down the aisles, talked about the colours, size, taste and references to what the children like to eat at home and nursery. The staff encouraged them to select some to buy for an activity at nursery and they chose several different ones to explore and tickle their taste buds.

The children chose a combination of sweet and sour fruits such as grapefruit, pomegranate, blueberries, lemons and limes, pineapple and strawberries. Which they helped to prepare back at nursery for their tasting activity.

They enjoyed the whole experience of choosing the products, helping to push the trolley, paying at the self-serve checkout using real money. One of the children was intrigued where the money was going declaring ‘its eating my money’ and catching the change as it came out of the till. They returned to nursery very proud with their shopping bags to show their wares to their friends.
