At Portland House pre-school children and babies joined together to complete a charity walk at Reinwood playing fields. The challenge was set for pre-school children to walk three laps of the field and babies to complete one. The parents and children had been busy weeks before collecting sponsorship on their sponsor forms. Children had been invited to attend in fancy dress, superhero or sports clothes to add fun to the event. The excitement started in the morning as the children arrived in their outfits. Amongst them were Batman, Superman, Snow White, a cat and a bear! We arrived at the fields early to prepare our bodies for the challenge. Kayleigh led the children in the preparation demonstrating exercises and stretches. At 10.00am, the “Start Up” flag was raised and the walk began!! The pre-school children were keen to start and ran around the field for half of the first lap! All the children were laughing and encouraging each other to keep up. As the children approached the end of each lap a flag was raised indicating the lap number to help the children see how far there was still to go. During the walk, the children sang their favourite songs such as “The Wheels on the Bus” and the Portland House Woodland Song. We used our bodies in different ways hopping, jumping, skipping and developing a walking train. Some of the babies were pushed around the field in pushchairs and others held their keyperson’s hand. Everyone cheered as the babies completed their lap around the field. As the pre-school children were finishing the last lap they decided to run again. They could see the “Finish” flag in the distance so they ran towards it with their arms up in the air and shouting “Hooray!” It was obvious that they were proud of their achievements as spirits were high. The event was a great success, the weather was fine and all the children and adults worked together to achieve a fantastic end result raising approx. £685 in aid of the “Candle Lighters” charity. If anyone still has any outstanding sponsorship money to bring in to nursery or should you wish to make a donation please kindly pass on to a staff member; all contributions will be gratefully received and will benefit a fantastic charity. Well done everyone!
