At Holly Bank's Baby Room, we had a wonderful time celebrating National Puzzle Day by helping our little ones develop their memory, problem-solving skills, and fine motor abilities through fun and engaging puzzles!
Throughout the day, our babies worked with a variety of puzzle boards, shape sorters, and stackers both indoors and outdoors. These activities not only promote essential cognitive development but also provide a great opportunity for improving fine motor skills as the babies twist, press, and fit pieces together.
This year’s theme was “Different Types of Transport,” which made for a fun and interactive learning experience. To support the babies, we used words alongside actions to help them complete jigsaws. For example, we introduced simple words like “twist,” “press,” “in,” and “out” while demonstrating the actions. This not only reinforced their understanding but also gave them a sense of accomplishment when they succeeded in completing their puzzles.
For our younger babies, we modelled how to complete simple 4-piece jigsaws, encouraging them to pull pieces apart and explore how they fit together. For those who found these puzzles a bit too easy, we introduced more challenging activities, such as train tracks and shape sorters, to keep them engaged and thinking critically.
As they worked through these activities, we also helped them develop language skills by naming the shapes as they picked them up. Whenever they got stuck, we were there to guide them, pointing at the correct hole on the shape sorter and naming it for them, making the learning process fun and interactive.
It was a fantastic day filled with learning and laughter, and we’re so proud of the progress our little ones made. Puzzle-solving isn’t just fun—it’s an essential building block for their growth and development!
