Thursday the 25th January is 'Burns Night' celebrating all things Scottish! At Holly Bank we started the day by having some delicious porridge, it was perfect on today’s cold winters morning. In our tuff tray we had oats, flour and blue paint which we used to create our own flag, we had lots of fun using brushes and our hands to mix it all together.
We even designed our own flag by mark making with blue crayons and jumbo chalks. See if you can spot it on our window!
The babies made blue playdough to represent the Scottish flag. The babies explored the texture of the dough with their hands and fingers. The younger babies developed their palmer grasps by using the chunky tools, and developed their fine motor skills when pushing blue and white feathers into the dough. In the garden we experienced windy weather just like the people in Scotland do. We made ribbon sticks and watched the ribbons blow in the wind. We listened to the different sounds that the wind made. We made Scottish thistle pictures using paint, glue and wool. We explored the texture of the paint on our fingers and hands. We used strips of wool for the prickly part of the thistle.
The preschool children participated in our version of the Highland Games with some caber tossing, carrying heavy 'stones' and tyre rolling. We also enjoyed weaving our own tartan using coloured strips of paper. We enjoyed a story about Greyfriars Bobby who lived in Edinburgh. Some of the children in preschool had visited Edinburgh and told their friends about their adventures. Lastly, we have been learning about rhymes and poetry this week in honour of Robert Burns.
