Bird Nesting Week

Whilst out in the garden the Holly Bank babies enjoyed helping to collect some sticks, leaves and other natural resources to build a nest for the birds. Picking up the different materials to place in the nest was a great way to help them develop their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. The babies were all intrigued by the different textures of the natural materials they found. To enhance this we introduced some descriptive language such as "hard" "crunchy" "crispy" and "bendy" for the babies to try to repeat. Then we sat down in the garden and listened to the birds around us singing. We also enjoyed looking out of the window to spot some birds too.

The preschool children have been making a nest box for the birds using resources they found around nursery. First we found a template and then carefully cut out the shape from a large cardboard box, then we all joined in to paint the pieces before carefully sticking them together. We then collected some shredded paper from the office and placed it inside the box to make a cosy nest for the little birds to sleep on. Finally we all talked about what we should name our nest box and decided it should be named “Birds B&B".
