Big Garden Bird Watch

This week Holly Bank nursery children took part in the Big Garden Bird Watch, joining thousands of families and schools across the UK in counting the birds visiting our outdoor area. Inspired by the annual survey organised by the RSPB, the children became enthusiastic young wildlife explorers!

What We Did

Armed with binoculars and our tick sheets, the children spent time quietly observing the nursery garden. We talked about:

  • Why birds visit gardens
  • How to spot differences in size and colour
  • The importance of staying still and quiet

The children were excited to spot several common garden birds, including:

  • Robin
  • Blackbird
  • Blue Tit
  • Woodpigeon
  • House Sparrow

We compared the bright red chest of the robin with the shiny feathers of the blackbird and listened carefully to the different bird sounds around us.

Learning Through Nature

Taking part in the Bird Watch supported many areas of learning:

  • Understanding the World – learning about local wildlife and habitats
  • Communication and Language – describing what we could see and hear
  • Maths Skills – counting and recording how many birds we spotted

The children also helped to refill our bird feeders and made their own to take home with Jayne. We also talked about how we can care for wildlife, especially during the colder months.

We are so proud of our little bird watchers for their patience, curiosity and fantastic counting skills!
