Forget the Tour de France; the staff team at Oakwood House Nursery and Forest School have just completed a 24hr bike-a-thon (with a difference) in aid of their nominated charity The Forget Me Children’s Hospice. For 24hrs the enthusiastic staff team and parents pedalled on exercise bikes continuously from 9am Friday 5th August until 9am Saturday 6th August at the nursery. The staff and keen parents took it in shifts day and night on an exercise bike in the nursery foyer. Over the 24hrs the staff team cycled 911km, the equivalent of the distance from Huddersfield to Florence, Italy, raising over £1500 for the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice! Nursery Manager, Samantha Richmond explains “I am so proud of all the staff team and parents that took part, spirits where high from start to finish and the children had a great time cheering them on and plotting their route on the map. We were all very excited about this fundraiser as we really wanted to do something challenging but lots of fun. We never expected to raise so much. I would also like to thank our very own parent gym instructor from Pure Body Solutions who warmed up all the staff before the event started and kindly raised money for the charity too and the Wharfside Workout/Power Station in Commercial Street, Slaithwaite who kindly donated the bikes for the fundraiser. Gina Fielding, Community Fundraiser for the charity explains “We are delighted that Oakwood Nursery has chosen The Forget Me Not Trust as their charity. There are more than 400 children and families in our area who need the help the hospice offers. The hospice is due to be completed by the end of 2011 and will cost £2.5m to build and equip we are very grateful to for every penny the local community raises for this very special charity.” Well done everyone!
