Putting Children First

Portland Nurseries Training Day Friday 28th October 2011
There are two days each year when all four nurseries close and the staff come together for training. On Friday 28th October 80 staff including administrators and cooks spent a day at the Textile Centre of Excellence, reviewing how the tracking and measuring of a child’s development influences the development of staff skills and performance.
The workshops were led by the nursery managers and Early Years Professionals (EYPs) and focused on six key areas;
1: Getting the most from your PDP- Highlighting the benefits to all staff of an effective PDP
2: Setting Measurable (SMART) Objectives-
3: The Development Cycle-How the different review processes and related documents all link together to support a child’s development
4: Identifying Development Needs- helping staff understand the link between the development needs of the children and themselves-
5: The Learning Journey- How the Learning Journey links with the tracking of a child’s development
6: Reviewing Performance- How to map a child’s progress and relate this to staff’s progression
Each of these keys areas are interlinked and place the child at the centre of everything we do.
The feedback from staff was extremely positive and we all appreciated having the time to reflect and improve our practice.
