PORTLAND HOUSE PARENT NEWSLETTER AUTUMN TERM 2025

Hello Autumn!! We wish everyone a toasty warm welcome as we said goodbye for now to the summer and also to our preschool children who have transitioned to school this September and welcome all our new families. As we enter into this vibrant season we are enjoying the rich, colourful palette it brings with all its natural treasures such as conkers, acorns and colourful leaves. Autumn provides the perfect opportunity to teach children about seasonal change. Sensory play lets them see some of the different changes up close as they watch leaves change from green to shades of gold and red, feel the different textures of natural materials and listen to the sounds they make. The children are thoroughly embracing change and are particularly noticing the changes to their outdoor environments, nursery garden and in their local community. With the dark nights drawing in and less daylight hours we are having fun experimenting with light and different science activities such as making dark dens and creating shadows the children have enjoyed creating their own artwork to celebrate and recall the recent Diwali and bonfire events.

Learning focus at the moment

Babies 1

Did somebody order mud pie?" As the leaves start to fall off the trees it has given us great play opportunities to make a variety of fun and different things in the mud kitchen. Many of our older babies have enjoyed telling us what food they are making and enjoy pretending to eat it or feed it to us. Meanwhile the younger babies have enjoyed exploring the textures of the natural materials we have found for the mud kitchen, such as conkers, pinecones, leaves and of course mud.

Babies 2

The babies have had lots of garden fun scavenging for natural treasures such as different coloured leaves, sticks, branches and cones some children even brought conkers from their family walks . All these were put to good use from being used in the mud kitchen to collaging and even using conkers instead of paint brushes. We also made the most of the season by finding lots of muddy puddles to jump in and had a splashing good time!

Toddlers

In the toddler room we have been learning all about local community during harvest festival, some of the children went on a little outing to Aldi where we picked out lots of different fruits that are in season for us to do some fruit tasting. While at the shop he children bought some tinned and dried products that they chose for us to add to our harvest festival collection. We have been learning about road safety including how to cross the road safely by looking both ways and making sure the cars had gone past, holding hands and staying close to an adult at all times.

The children have also enjoyed taking part in reading stories about foods and taking about in discussions about all about favourite fruits and vegetables.

Preschool

This term in preschool, the children have been exploring our natural world around us. The children have loved learning about Autumn, and exploring all of the natural changes from Summer to Autumn. They have been exploring the preschool garden to identify signs of Autumn including: leaves changing colour, leaves falling off trees and the change in weather.

Before the preschool children go outside they are able to identify the weather, during our days of the week focus, and identify what they think they may need to wear to play in the garden. In French, the preschool children have enjoyed learning many new nursery rhymes in French. The focus specifically being: Incy, wincy spider and Tommy thumb.

Preschool have been having fun in STEAM recognising and exploring new equipment. They have used their equipment to take part in experiments like making: volcanos and clouds. During phonics, the children have been focusing on using our listening ears and listening to the world around us. The children have been working on their environmental sounds which will be extended further next term.

Over the next coming months the children will focus upcoming events within October and November. This started with the children participating in many Halloween based activities. being creative making many Halloween decorations, specifically black and orange ones! Then the children  focused on bonfire night, learning all about the bonfires and fireworks. We will have focus times with the children to talk about their personal experiences with bonfire night. Which will offer the children opportunities to explore their primary colours and mixing them. The children will be looking at children in need and we will work with the children to understand children in need that the charity will help and participate in fun activities that look at doing things in 25s. Finally, the children will be participating in games that challenge their physical skills. Doing stop, start games to test the children balance and coordination.

We are all really looking forward to having our mini musica sessions with Ana which will run on alternative Thursdays starting this month and we are excited to begin sessions with the Huddersfield giants in the new year!.

Health and wellbeing

As we are entering into the time of year where illnesses are on the rise I would like to remind you of the exclusion periods for our sickness and illness policy along with the company definition of a well child.

Portland Nurseries defines a well child as follows: A well child is not reliant on Calpol, does not have a high temperature over (37.8 and above), is well enough to participate in all nursery activities, has a normal appetite, is happy and sociable, does not require a greater staff ratio and has normal bowel function.

If any of the above applies to your child then we ask for your support to help minimise the spread of illness by observing exclusion periods and keeping your child at home until they are fully recovered. Any child with symptoms of vomiting and diarrhoea must be absent from nursery until they have been clear for 48 hours and a child with a temperature must be free from a fever without medicine for 24 hours before they can return.

If you are unsure or require any further guidance then please speak to your nursery manager.

Autumn Outdoor Clothing

As the weather gets colder please ensure your child has suitable clothing to participate comfortably in all aspects of outdoor play that are all clearly labelled with their name and that can be kept at nursery. We would kindly request that you bring a warm fleece to wear under the outdoor coats and a pair wellingtons for participating in outdoor play. Scarves hats and gloves will be advisable once the weather becomes milder.

Lost and Found Property

We kindly request your cooperation in labelling your child's belongings, including shoes, clothes, hats and other personal items. Clear labelling with your child's name will help ensure that everything is returned to its rightful owner. This simple step will save time and minimise any potential mix-ups. Please check the Lost and Found property boxes periodically to retrieve any misplaced items.

  • To ensure the safety of the children is maintained and to ease what is already an extremely busy area, please be considerate and park within the allocated parking spaces provided.  As the nights are drawing in this season please be extra vigilant for people walking in the carpark as vision can be impaired.
  • In the UK It is a legal requirement for children to be transported in a car seat appropriate for their age and stage., children must use a child car seat until they are 12 years old or 135 cm tall, whichever comes first. The seat must be appropriate for the child's height and/or weight and meet legal safety standards. Once a child outgrows their car seat, they must use a seat belt, though the back seat is recommended until at least age 13 for better protection against airbags.
