Nursery Closure Dates

Friday 4th April  – Staff training Day

At Portland nurseries we believe that for us to provide your children with the best possible experiences whilst in our care it is mandatory to keep staff training up to date and refreshed regularly. With this, we hold two training days a year where we close the nursery to allow us the time to ensure knowledge and skills are up to date with current practice guidelines.

We appreciate your co-operation and understanding when it comes to closing the nursery for our staff training days.

Friday 18th April (Good Friday) – Monday 21st April (Easter Monday)

Easter Holidays (Nursery reopens Tuesday 22nd April)

Learning Focus for this term

We are focusing on becoming independent learners for all of our children during this term, our team of early years educators will be encouraging the children to make independent choices in their play ready to become life long learners.

To achieve this children need to be secure and settled in their environment, to help children feel secure and settled family photographs are a great tool. Many of our children have photographs in their room of their families, pets and friends. If you have not already sent some photographs for your child please could you email oakwood@portlandnurseries.co.uk along with the names of who is in the photograph and we will do the rest.

Babies

This term will see the baby room practitioners establishing new bonds with their new key children, scaffolding their learning to support new skills.

Our youngest children in the baby room will be continuing to develop their language and communication skills from a language rich environment with songs, stories and poems. In addition our older babies will be developing their personal social and emotional development ready for their transitions to the toddler room.

Our youngest children will be learning through their senses with lots of messy play focusing on the prime areas of learning.

In addition to this we will be supporting the children with their physical development / gross motor skills such as crawling, pulling to stand, walking and running both indoors and outdoors.

Toddlers

The children in our toddler room will be learning through lots of supported schematic play, giving value to their thoughts and ideas. Schematic play happens when children are involved in repeated actions or certain behaviours as they explore the world around them and try to find out how things work.

We continue to be very proud of how successful our toddler children have become in developing their toileting skills and independence, during this next term this is something that we are continuing to work on so that toileting becomes embedded for all our children. We will be looking to parents and carers to support us with this as consistency for the children is vital. Should you require any help or advice please speak with your child’s key person.

Preschool

As our now oldest preschool children enter their last term we will begin to support their transition into primary with lots of discussions about moving on to primary school. We will support this by lots of stories and role play with school uniform dressing up.

This term we will be continuing our visits to Thornhill Care Home, this has proved to be a valuable learning opportunity for the preschool children who are thoroughly enjoying this experience.

Our popular cooking club will continue this term with lots of new recipes each with a specific link to our curriculum to embed learning. Each child will be given the opportunity to visit the science kitchen and take part in cooking club at least once each week. Watch out for your child bringing home their delicious homemade treats.

Outdoor Learning Focus for this term

As always the children at Oakwood House participate in outdoor play whatever the weather and this term will be no different.

As the weather begins to warm up we will be enjoying more meals outside, which is always enjoyed by all the children. During this term our learning focus will be rapidly changing seasons and how different our forest will look once the spring flowers begin to grow.

The toddler room children will be focusing on how to care for our environment, looking after our plants and flowers to watch them grow.

The preschool children will be looking at life cycles of flowers, plants in our forest as well as insect life cycles.

Please could we remind you to ensure your child is provided with a fleece jacket or jumper that they are able to wear under our outdoor suits and a pair of named wellies to leave on site.

WOW News

 Acorn Library

We are delighted to announce the opening of Oakwood House brand new space on the middle floor – Acorn Library.

This space has been transformed from a meeting room into a fabulous space for the children to read books, listen to stories and have quite time away from the busy rooms.

Acorn Library was officially opened on World Book Day by our fabulous school council, who have helped create some library and book rules.

The children throughout the whole nursery will have the opportunity to visit the library regularly weather it be for a story session with their key person or to bring a book back to their room to embed their learning.

Our latest favourite story across all age groups is, ‘You Choose’

Project Update

Eco Schools – All our nurseries are working hard towards our annual Eco Schools award. The accreditation has recently changed and this year is more specifically aimed at those in Early Years which means that this year the resources and activity ideas are better suited to most of the children within our settings whereas in previous years, it has been aimed solely at all children in education. We have begun some really exciting lessons with the children and have been teaching them about lots of different areas such as Energy, Water, Global Citizenship and lots more. Our submission for the award will be at the end of this academic year in July and we will receive our certificate and feedback shortly after which we will share with you.

Start Life Well – We are about to take on a new accreditation, the Start Life Well award which focuses on physical activity and nutrition in our settings. Each nursery will be assessing all areas of physical activity and nutrition before deciding on an area to improve upon. This may be improving gross motor activities indoors and outdoors or looking at staff physical activity. Each setting will choose something different following an assessment which will enable us to share best practice and ideas across the group.

SuperKind – This is another new project for us this year. The aim of this one is to bring social action and active citizenship into the classrooms through different topics and kind actions. Each child will be tasked with doing one kind action per year which can be done through a range of different activities whether that is by collecting litter, visiting a care home, donating to a food bank and many more. We will keep you updated with our progress as the project is rolled out.
