HOLLY BANK NEWSLETTER SUMMER TERM 2025

Welcome to our Summer Newsletter and what a beautiful Summer we are having. Of course here at Holly Bank we embrace the outdoors in all weathers, but this lovely sunny weather has given us even more opportunities to explore the outdoor space in different ways. Water has been a big feature as most days we have been trying to keep cool. The children have loved our solar powered fountain and the sprinkler, it has been great fun!

The children planted our vegetable plants and we now have a healthy looking vegetable patch which we cannot wait to harvest and taste the produce we have grown.

Of course as the Summer term comes to an end it is a time of mixed emotions for us as we say farewell to some of our preschool children as they leave us to go to school. Although we are sad to see them go, our hearts burst with pride at the confident, independent and eager learners they have become.

Learning focus at the moment

This term we have focused on our gross motor skills, so using the outdoors to run, jump, balance and dig. In every age group we encourage independence, supporting the children to “have a go” and giving them the time to complete tasks themselves.

Wellbeing is always paramount, so we have focused on supporting the children with their emotions and giving them opportunities to express how they are feeling. Time to relax and chill out especially on the hot days has been something we have been mindful of, so we have provided the children with lots of opportunities to do this by sleeping outdoors in the breeze or simply sitting in a shady spot with a book.

But most of all we have focused on having fun, as having fun is the best way to learn.

Preschool

The preschool children really enjoy the outdoor space, but this term we focused on our vegetable patch. The children used their gross motor skills to dig the patch and prepare the soil for planting. They carefully planted the vegetables and then watered them each day and watched as the plants grew and flourished. We planted Spring onions, baby carrots, broccoli, peppers and lots of other vegetables. Now we wait patiently until we can harvest and taste them….watch out for our next update.

We also enjoyed International Mud Day, where the children helped to create puddles in the soil by digging down and filling it up with water from the hose pipe (before the ban of course!). This provided the opportunity to jump and splash and have enormous fun getting muddy,  they also made lots of mud pies in our mud kitchen.

Each Tuesday the children look forward to their Spanish session with Jade, singing the songs and learning new words in Spanish each week, but also being able sit, listen and take turns. The children amaze us  as they remember the Spanish they learned in previous weeks and pick up more new words quickly.

The children eagerly join in the weekly Science Kitchen sessions. The importance of washing their hands and putting on their hats and aprons and clearing away after the session is equally as important as what they make. The children are given the opportunity to weigh, measure, mix and roll, and also chat and recall about times they have baked at home with grandma or their parents, it is always nice to hear the children’s stories, but even better to taste what they have baked.

Toddlers

The Toddlers have enjoyed being out in the garden too, not only have they spent time in their willow garden exploring the natural resources, they have climbed through the bushes and looked underneath the logs for insects and bugs and they have also joined in to help care for the vegetable patch too helping to water the plants using our special watering can. We talked about what vegetables we were growing and what they need to grow and flourish, like water and sunshine.

The children take a keen interest in bugs and the wildlife that visits the garden, we managed to get a close look at a bumble bee and a fabulous Lime Hawk moth caterpillar. And they regularly care for the baby Robin who visits each day for some seeds from our bird feeders.

The hot days have given the opportunity to cool down with some water play, not only have we explored what sinks and floats, the children have worked together as a team to fill and empty with different sized jugs and bowls. And they had great fun running through the sprinkler, splashing and getting wet.

Babies

The children in the baby room have enjoyed being out in the garden, it has given them the opportunity to get really messy. They have been digging in the sand and mud and enjoying the sensory experience of the water and shaving foam.

They have chilled out under our new garden sail, enjoying a book or sleeping in the shade.

There is always lots of singing and chatter as we encourage the children to expand their ever increasing vocabulary.

Supporting Life-Saving Missions: Our Donation to Yorkshire Air Ambulance

Thanks to your generous sponsorships—and Portland Nurseries matching every penny—we were thrilled to present a £2,600 cheque to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance following our HeliHop event!
The children all did a brilliant job joining in with the Heli hop challenge by doing laps around the garden.

30 hours funding

From September 2025, eligible working parents in England will be able to access 30 hours of funded childcare per week for children aged nine months and above. This is an expansion from the current 15 hours for younger children. The funding is available for 38 weeks of the year, typically aligning with school terms, but we offer a stretched offer over the year with fewer hours per week.

We have limited spaces available so please if you are intending to increase your hours please contact your nursery manager as soon as possible.

Reading with your child

Reading to young children, particularly in their early years, has a significant positive impact on their future life outcomes. Shared reading experiences foster language development, improve literacy skills, and boost cognitive abilities, while also promoting mental wellbeing. These benefits extend into adulthood, with increased chances of academic success, better employment prospects, and improved mental health.

The Department for Education and the National Literacy Trust have joined forces to launch a National Year of Reading to start in January 2026.

The campaign aims to bring together parents, nurseries, schools, libraries, businesses and literacy experts to foster a love of reading for pleasure in children and young people.

Findings from the National Literacy Trust’s annual survey carried out last month found that just 1 in 3 children and young people aged 8 to 18 said they enjoyed reading in their free time in 2025.

Funding for the National Year of Reading has been donated by a number of organisations and publishers, including Premier League, Julia Rausing Trust, and the Arts Council England.

To kick start the campaign, the National Literacy Trust will distribute more than 72,000 new books to children in areas with the highest rates of child poverty to support positive reading habits at home.

The charity’s Summer Reading Challenge also aims to ensure more children have the opportunity to take part and build a love of reading over the school summer holidays..

CEO of the National Literacy Trust, Jonathan Douglas, said, ‘At a time when we are witnessing the lowest levels of reading enjoyment and daily reading in a generation, we are delighted to be working with the government to deliver the National Year of Reading 2026 - a bold, society-wide campaign to reimagine how we understand, support and promote reading. Reading is the foundation of a successful life - the key to unlocking potential, strengthening social cohesion, enhancing wellbeing and boosting skills.’
