HARLEQUIN PARENT CHRISTMAS NEWSLETTER 2025

Dear Parents

As we are fast approaching the festive period I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our lovely families a very ‘Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!’ with the very best of wishes and good health for 2026 year ahead from myself and the Harlequin Team.

We have had a magical time during December bringing sparkle and curiosity into our daily learning and adventures and not forgetting a surprise visit from Santa who popped in to see the children at their Christmas parties and brought a lovely gift for each of the children.

We have been very fortunate to have our parents participate in our children’s learning experiences. The children have enjoyed having parents join in for our very successful Stay and Plays over the year and we have been very lucky to have some parents come in and talk about their jobs and different hobbies they enjoy. This has provided our children with an opportunity to learn about different ways of life and occupations.

Charity

The spirit of giving has ricocheted throughout the nurseries enabling us to come together to help the charities through a variety of events, by giving a little to help others less fortunate and spreading Christmas cheer. The harvest collection for the Wellbeing Centre was highly successful and we are currently raising funds over the next year for our nominated local charity ‘Ruddi’s retreat’.

The charity wreath making event that was held at Portland House was a great success and raised more than £400, it enabled parents across all the nurseries and relatives to try out new skills, meet new people and create some spectacular festive wreaths to don their doors at home. It would be lovely to see you at this event next year.

Thank you to everyone who has joined in with wearing their festive jumper for the current charity fundraising event which raised £40.30.  Tickets for the Christmas raffle this will be drawn week commencing Monday 22nd December. If you have not yet bought any tickets and would like some there is still opportunity to purchase them please message/speak to your child’s key person.

Staff News

The end of the year also brings a change in staffing for the New Year. At the end of December, we say goodbye to Alice who moves to manage Holly Bank in January.  Alice has been at Harlequin for 18 months and we are very grateful for all she has done here, she will be greatly missed by staff and children alike.

Learning focus at the moment

Babies

The babies have had a wonderful time exploring all the sensory experiences this season brings, from dancing to festive music, enjoying circle times learning new rhymes and Christmas songs and stories, to making marvelous creations of art work to take home for the festive period.

The babies have enjoyed exploring the change in weather over the last term. They have spent lots of time in the garden stomping through fallen leaves and collecting fallen twigs and conkers that were added to the malleable play to look at the different prints and patterns they could make. As the weather has gotten colder, the children were excited to discover ice; feeling its cold texture and watching as it melted into a puddle. The Festive period has been full of sensory exploration; with lots of lights, music and textures to discover.

In the New Year the children in the Baby room will be focusing on developing their independence; practicing finding and recognising their place names at the table, putting on and taking off their shoes and learning to recognise themselves and others as individuals, through song and rhymes.

Toddlers

The toddlers have been exploring all the different textures over the last few weeks, the glittery tinsel, sparkly baubles and the rough texture of the Christmas tree branches. They have been learning some new festive songs and listening to Christmassy stories. The children have enjoyed creating their masterpieces to take home over the festive break.

Going forward into the new term, we will be welcoming some new children into the toddler group and helping them to settle in to nursery. We will also be focusing on independence skills such as using cutlery, helping to set up the tables at mealtimes and serving food for themselves at meal times. The children will continue with Mini Musica with Anna every other Thursday and Spanish with Jade on a Tuesday, these provide opportunities to engage with songs and rhymes, helping to improve speech and communication.

Preschool

Preschool have focused on celebrations, festivals and feelings. The children have been working to identify the feelings they are having, how to recognise what they may look like and how to ask for help if needed. The children have also been learning about empathy and how to support those friends who may need help when experiencing big feelings.

Next term will be looking at winter and cold places, and traditional tales. The children will explore the different places around the world where it is cold, the different weather we experience in winter and the animals who live in those habitats.

Jemimah will be introducing the children to Traditional Tales and story structure during the Spring term. The children will learn that stories have a beginning, middle and end and will be able to accurately recall the key parts of the stories.

We would like to reintroduce Mystery Readers into nursery, this would be an opportunity to come in and surprise the children by reading them a story of your choice at a mutually convenient time. If you would like to take part then please speak to Nina or Jemimah.

And finally ....

As we enjoy the last few nursery days of 2025 we look forward to seeing you joining in with adventures in the year ahead with many exciting events in the planning which details will be available in the next newsletter. Thank you for all the generous festive gifts and cards that you have given the staff team of which we are all extremely appreciative.
