Planting, growing and harvesting

Here at Holly Bank we are lucky enough to have a planting area in our mud kitchen as well as fruit plants growing in our garden.

This year we have been busy planting potatoes and runner beans. The children have found it fascinating to watch the plants grown and see how different they look. Once they were ready, the children got very involved in harvesting.

They dug out the potatoes and cleaned them, putting the leaves that we don’t eat into the compost bin to break down for our next round of planting. They also helped to pick and wash apples from the apple tree and blackberries from the blackberry bush. Our nursery cook turned the potatoes into a delicious potato salad, and we had fresh fruit for afterwards!

These activities are great for our Eco Project as they help the children to learn about Biodiversity and Healthy Living.
