Over the next ten weeks Helen, the Early Years Teacher Trainee at Portland House, is going to be working on a number of projects leading staff development and promoting home learning opportunities for the children and their families.
One of these projects is a collection of home learning kits filled with resources and advice to support bilingual and EAL (English as an Additional Language) children and families with singing, reading and the development of communication skills in both English and their home language at home.
Resources will include dual language children’s books and information for parents (translated where possible) about the importance of children learning to speak both languages and the positive importance this can have on their learning and development in later life. Children can take these kits home in bags to share with their families and choose different books to borrow as part of a lending library in poppies room.
